The Reek Pilgrimage was revived by the Administrator of Westport, Fr. Michael McDonald in 1903.  Following the Pilgrimage in 1904 Fr. McDonald set about building the Oratory which was completed in 1905.  It is without the church with the highest elevation in Ireland.

The Oratory is a functioning church which is open to visitors Tuesday to Sunday during the months of July and August from 10:00am – 4:00pm when conditions permit.

There is an opportunity for pilgrims to come and pray, sign the visitors book, leave a prayer request and light a candle when the church is open.

When Mass is celebrated in the Oratory, visitors are asked to enter only to attend Mass.

Mass is celebrated in the Oratory on Garland Friday (The Friday before Reek Sunday) at 10:00am.. On Reek Sunday Mass is celebrated every half hour beginning at 8:00am, with the last Mass beginning at 2:00pm..  Mass is celebrated on the 15th of August at 12:00noon.

Visiting priests are most welcome to celebrate Mass at any time on the summit, providing the Oratory is available and the priest has a valid Celebret.  The priest should contact the Parish Secretary in Westport 098-28871 to book the Oratory.

The key of the Oratory should be collected before climbing at the Presbytery in Westport and returned there afterwards.  The priests Celebret should be presented to be copied in the Presbytery. 

Priests should take their Celebret with them up the mountain, as they may be asked to produce it again by Parish Staff.

When Parish Staff are on the summit, their instructions must be heeded at all times. Staff have the right of final decision on all matters pertaining to the Oratory and the toilets on the summit pertaining to their use.

The Oratory is available for Marriage Ceremonies of the Roman Catholic Rite, provided that the usual requirements for getting married are fulfilled.
