Carrowbeg College

Carrowbeg College

Our original Carrowbeg College is a mixed, multi-denominational school, and has a proud reputation for specialising in skills-based subjects. The school provides excellent modern facilities in its highly equipped practical subject rooms, and in keeping with its commitment to delivering quality Post Leaving Certificate courses, Carrowbeg College leads the way in providing modern computer and technological facilities.

Our aim is to view each boy and girl as individuals with their own particular talents, needs, interests and ambitions and to help them reach their full potential both educationally and socially. We encourage each young person to complete the Leaving Certificate Programme but recognise that different students have different aptitudes and requirements. At Carrowbeg College, our classes are small and our students get a lot of individual attention and hands-on experience. Teachers get to know individual pupils very well and the fact that the student population is small faciltates an open friendly atmosphere in the school.

Mission Statement of Carrowbeg College

  • to educate students to take their place  in a changing society
  • to recognise the individual worth of  each student
  • to assist each pupil to have the necessary skills, values and attitudes for life.

Pastoral Care and Code of Conduct

The staff at Carrowbeg College believes that a code of positive
discipline contributes to the creation of an orderly environment that
allows learning to occur.  Discipline helps socialise pupils into
values of honesty, courtesy and regard for others.  In the area of
student behaviour, we believe that staff and students should work
together in a mutually respectful and harmonious environment

Learning Support

Carrowbeg College's programme for pupils with special educational needs is carefully co-ordinated in consultation with parents and primary school teachers. The resource team comes together regularly to assess and review student progress. Individual education plans are devised for each student and our computerised resource room with
excellent special needs software is a wonderful asset to the students.

Career Guidance

Students are advised on career choices by the School Career Guidance Counsellor and visits are arranged to Careers Information days in third level colleges. Visitors are invited to address students on career choices and students are encouraged to use work experience to explore opportunities to suit their individual ambitions and aptitudes. We offer a broad range of Post Leaving Certificate courses in Carrowbeg College many of which provide a follow-on to subject areas studied at second level.

Counselling

Carrowbeg College is a DEIS school and enjoys many advantages through  this programme. As well as the services of our school counsellor, personal development courses are organised in the school as the need arises and individual support is also available to students through the School Completion Programme.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Our School benefits from the involvement of students in many different extra-curricular activities.  They help develop relationships between students, staff, other schools and members of the community.

Carrowbeg College recognises and appreciates the multifaceted advantages of participation in sporting activities to the individual and to the School. It is our policy to offer as wide a range of activities as is practicable to students during their time with us.   Use is made of on-site facilities and those of local clubs or establishments such as GAA, soccer, athletics, rugby, golf, leisure and equitation centres. Day-long activities in the Achill Outdoor Pursuits Centre are also offered. We are now including circuit
training in the gym and boxing to our list of activities. Table tennis and board games are played during lunch time.

Gaisce

Each year our 4th year students undertake a programme to gain the President's Gaisce Award. They complete a series of activities involving personal development, community service, learning a new skill and finally participating in a 25km overnight trek during which they are self reliant, cooking for themselves, camping out and carrying all their own gear. The presentation of the Awards is a gala event for the students, their parents and teachers.

Parents’ Association

We acknowlege the importance of partnership with parents in educating our young people. To re-enforce this partnership, the school has a Parents’ Association elected by the parents of school-going students. The role of the Parents’ Association is to act as an advisory body on major school issues, and to promote the educational and general
interests of our students. Members of the Parents’ Council attend school functions and participate in extra-curricular events.
