The Mayo VEC campus at Newport Rd. Westport, houses Westport College of Further Education and Carrowbeg College, a second level mixed multi-denominational school.

Westport College of Further Education was officially launched in spring 2009 to cater to the needs of adults and post leaving cert students. Over the next few years the adult college will expand to become the main focus of educational enterprise on the campus. A major extension was built in Summer 2009 to meet the growing educational needs in this sector.

Full time Post leaving Courses:

FETAC Level 5

• Agriculture and Rural Enterprise,

• Art & Design (Portfolio Preparation),

• Computer Studies/Office Management,

• Computer Aided Design,

• Construction Technology,

• Drama & Theatre Studies,

• Engineering Technology,

• Furniture Design,

• Hairdressing,

• Horticulture & Landscaping,

• Laboratory Techniques,

• Motor Technology.

Back to Education Initiative (B.T.E.I.) (Level 3 to Level 6)

What is it?
BTEI is a part-time, flexible learning opportunity for young people and adults to upgrade skills or to gain an extra qualification. The aim is to give people an opportunity to combine returning to learning with family, work and other responsibilities.

Who is it for?
Anyone can join but priority will be given to those with less than upper second level education and those who hold a medical card or their dependants.

Can I get a Certificate?
Yes.  All courses are certified by the Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) .It is a qualification sought by employers and recognised nationally.

Part-Time Programmes (Levels 1 to 3):

The Service offers part-time tuition to adults who want to improve their basic skills and take that first step back into education. For example it offers support with:

Reading/Writing/Spelling, Driver Theory Test, Communications, Basic Computers,

Personal Development, Budgeting and Maths, Preparation for Work, Food and Nutrition,

Office Procedures, Personal & Interpersonal Skills.

Family Learning Courses

Home Study Skills, Learning Skills, Caring for Children,

Child Development and Play, Maths and Irish for Parents of Primary School

Children, Storysacks Course, Early Reading Support.

Workplace Learning

Computers, Interpersonal Skills, Maths – for employees in their place of work – supported by FAS.

English for Speakers of Other Languages.

All courses can lead to national certification with FETAC.
