In ancient times, Croagh Patrick was known as Cruachan Garbrois or Cruachan Aigle, called after Aigle, who in mythology killed Ciara, daughter of Lugh. Lugh was a god, one of the Tuatha Dé Danann at the mythological battle of Moytura. On the first of August, the festival of Lughnasa was held in many places in pagan Ireland, this mountain being one of them.
