  • Traders on the Reek Documentary

By Mary O'Malley as published on Louisburgh-Killeen Heritage Group. visit: https://www.louisburgh-killeenheritage.org/ "This is the story of the Families who for generations traded on Croagh Patrick providing refreshments to the weary pilgrims. What were the different routes taken by these families to bring all their supplies to the summit from the surrounding villages? How did this network of support, Meitheal and friendship endure the sometimes-harsh conditions? Who are these families and why were they so connected to Ireland’s Holy Mountain? Traditionally, the locals would climb Croagh Patrick on Garland Friday, the Friday before Reek Sunday, which is the last Sunday in July. On Friday 26th July 2024 after mass in Murrisk Carpark we premiered this short film telling the Traders stories and also had an excellent exhibition from the pupils of local primary schools. From August 2023 to 2024 Louisburgh-Killeen Heritage and Louisburgh Area Men’s Shed researched and gathered the stories and memories of some of the families who were Traders on the Reek. We met weekly in Lecanvey community centre to share information and plan the next steps. We visited all the local primary schools to invite the students to create art work and Holy Family N.S. Killeen, St. Patricks N.S. Louisburgh and Drummin N.S. submitted some beautiful paintings, PowerPoint presentations, poetry and essays including audio which you can view on our website." THAT CHRISTMAS JUMPER: What could be so wrong about putting on a Christmas jumper to spread some festive cheer and maybe raise much needed funds for a charity? One in three people under 35 buy a new Christmas jumper every year however I have some bad news for you – 95% of those Christmas Jumpers are made wholly or partly from plastic materials.  Polyester is a kind of plastic usually derived from petroleum.  It uses a lot of energy to produce and pollutes the water and air.  Polyester jumpers last for years and most of them end up in the landfill and never biodegrade.  I am afraid to say that the Christmas jumper has become one of the worst examples of fast fashion.  Most of these Christmas jumpers are only worn once during the Christmas period.  If you do want to wear a Christmas jumper this year, we suggest you buy one from a charity shop or swap with friends.  If your work or school is having a jumper day why not suggest a swap? Or donate your jumpers to the event?  In Westport I am delighted to say all our Charity shops have a wonderful range of pre loved Christmas jumpers in stock!  If you want to be truly creative – why not decorate a jumper you already wear with bits and bobs?  Onc less jumper will not fix our planet – but it is a start!   JUBILEE YEAR OF HOPE 2025 Archbishop Francis Duffy will launch this special year in our Parish and Diocese on December 15th at 11. 00a.m. Mass. ECO CONGREGATION GREENING: Christmas is an invitation to all to consider our Planet Earth and help reduce the environmental impact of the holiday season. According to a report by MyWaste.ie the annual Christmas splurge sees us produce 25% – 30% more waste than we normally do, which in turn costs all financially and harms the environment. Eco Congregation invites all to consider the burden of our Christmas activities. With just a little effort an imagination we can save financially and reduce the impact on our precious earth. It is important to be conscious of the planet in our Christmas preparation and choosing of gifts. Buying locally produced products wherever possible, supports small businesses, reduces transportation costs thus having a positive environmental impact. We can lessen the impact on our planet by choosing goods that are manufactured from recycled sources. It also helps to avoid where possible, buying gifts that require batteries. A survey found that 57% of people receive at least one unwanted gift, so ask people what they want for Christmas – or give them a few options to choose from. Focus on buying less and buying better.
