  • ‘We pray for them all the time’ – Gena Heraty on the people who kidnapped her in Haiti last year

Irish charity worker Gena Heraty has said she “prays all the time” for the men who kidnapped her in Haiti in August 2025. It has been four months since the Mayo native was held hostage from August 4 to August 29 in Haiti, where she works as an aid worker, supporting adults and children with special needs. Ms Heraty said “she wished to God” that there was another option for young men in Haiti who “get dragged into this kind of a life”, other than working for what she described as their “gang leaders.” "The thing about life is, you can be petrified, and still feel sad for people who are terrifying you,” said Ms Heraty, who added that her captors told her that they were “working for the devil”. Speaking today on RTÉ’s News at One programme, Ms Heraty said that being able to see those who were also held captive on a regular basis was helpful to “chat through things” and “laugh at some things”. Despite being a victim of an intruder attack in Haiti in 2013, she feels that Haiti is no more unsafe than many other places in the world. "Is it wise for people to get into cars, when you have car accidents every day of the week?” Ms Heraty said, justifying her decision to remain there and continue her work. "This is where I live, this is where my home is, this is where the children that I’m committed to are. "These children with disabilities deserve to be loved and taken care of, and provided with the best services.” Ms Heraty said that no matter how tough things got in Haiti, her work must continue. "When bad things happen, you just have to double your efforts to do good things – and we’re doing that,” Ms Heraty said. "When you love people you worry about them,” she said. She admitted that leaving home after her visit before Christmas was particularly difficult, as she saw first-hand the level of concern and anxiety that her family contend with, regarding her choice to live and work in a country that experiences such unrest. She thanked all of those who prayed for her during her time in captivity, and wants to assure the public that she is safe.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE FUTURE OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION IN YOUR SCHOOL: The current Department of Education survey on the future of patronage in the primary schools will determine what schools will divest.  It is important that those who wish for a change in patronage would have their voices heard.  It is equally important that those who are already satisfied with the current patronage model and who wish for a Catholic Education for their children, including sacramental preparation within school, would have their voices heard also.  For these reasons, and to ensure that an accurate picture emerges, you are invited to participate in this survey if you are a parent, guardian or a prospective parent of a primary school student.  Decisions on what schools will retain or lose their Catholic patronage will be influenced by the expressed opinions of those who participate in this survey.  Therefore, your opinion and the values you hold dear are important, and your voice needs to be heard about your local school.  Please take a few minutes to complete the survey. In the rush of Christmas, nature also offers a quiet pause - a chance to be restored by the mystery of life around us. The beauty of winter’s stillness, the sparkle of frost, and the evergreens standing strong, reminds us to breathe, to notice, and to find joy in the simple things. All welcome.   WESTPORT ECO-CONGREGATION: “Everything you have ever bought still exists on the Earth today. The planet cannot sustain this rate of over consumption. “This quote stopped me in my tracks this week.  Add this to the images we constantly see of waste mountains that are leeching all sorts of toxins into the earth, and the waterways. Here we are approaching that time of year when we are once again faced with the challenge of Christmas gifts… bombarded by ads telling us what we need to buy for one another when most of us have a super abundance of “stuff”! If we look to Nature as the ultimate gift giver e.g. trees and bushes who get all they need to grow from the soil, sun and rain, and then give of their abundance with pollen to feed the bees in Summer, and berries/fruits for birds and humans in Autumn before dropping their leaves for the creatures who then convert these to soil for next year’s growth, we see the perfect circular economy in action.  Could we learn from this?  Could we share our abundance with our family, friends and neighbours… either by re-gifting things that we have, sharing our gifts as cooks/bakers, or giving our time as an investment in relationships within our communities?  To be continued… The Children’s Advent & Christmas Calendar                                                                    Counts down the days and weeks to the Birth of Christ and the Season of Christmas. It offers simple suggestions to think about, talk about, pray about and do. Please keep it somewhere prominent and refer to it often in your home. (e.g. On the door of the fridge)   The Advent Candles on the Advent Wreath .1st Candle-Hope (called the Prophecy Candle) We remember God's promises and look forward with faith, just as the prophets longed for the Messiah 2nd Candle-Peace (called the Bethlehem Candle) We reflect on the peace Christ brings- peace in our hearts, our homes, and theworld. 3rd Candle-Joy (called the Shepherd’s Candle) The rose candle invites us to rejoice as Christmas draws near celebrating the joy of the Gospel 4th Candle--Love ( called the Angel’s Candle) We honour God's perfect love revealed in   Jesus and are called to share that love with each other.5th Candle- The Christ Candle for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the Twelve days of Christmas Together, these candles guide us in welcoming Christ with a hopeful, peaceful, joyful and loving heart.   The Jesse Tree is an Advent tradition that illustrates a kind of family tree of Jesus Christ. It leads back to Jesse (the father of King David) and other bible stories right to the time God created the world.  It's symbols, made by the senior National School Pupils, represent the prophets, ancestors and events from the Old Testament that foretold or led up to the birth of Jesus.

With just a little effort and imagination we can save financially, and reduce our impact on our precious earth – for example, choosing to buy goods that are manufactured from recycled sources; buying locally produced products wherever possible.  Such choices support small businesses and reduce transportation costs – all having a positive environmental .                                                                                          Focus on buying less and buying better. Together can make a difference! AID TO THE CHURCH IN NEED: WEEK OF WITNESS NOVEMBER 16 TH  - 23rd  World Day of the Poor reminds us that service to those most in need is at the heart of the mission of the Church. Today, the papal charity Aid to the Church in Need also begins a ‘Week of Witness’ highlighting the plight of those persecuted for their faith. It’s a sobering reality that today one in seven Christians suffer persecution because of their faith in Jesus.  On Nov 19th ‘Red Wednesday’ wear something e.g. a ribbon, a scarf, a tie’ a jumper’ a coat or jacket to show solidarity with the suffering Church and to remember the blood lost by Christians in defence of their faith.   REMEMBERING THE POOR. ST VINCENT DE PAUL: Annual Appeal : Drawing near to the poor in our midst will touch our lives. It will remind us of what really counts: to love God and our neighbour. Only this lasts forever, everything else passes away. What we invest in love remains, the rest vanishes. Today we might ask ourselves: ‘What counts for me in life? Where am I making my investments?’ In fleeting riches, with which the world is never satisfied, or in the wealth bestowed by God, who gives eternal life? This is the choice before us: to live in order to gain things on earth, or to give things away in order to gain heaven. Where heaven is concerned, what matters is not what we have, but what we give.  Pope Francis. “Remember we do what we can because you give what you can”   ROSCOMMON SOLSTICE CHOIR CHRISTMAS SPECIAL: With guest performance by Westport Children’s Choir. The Laudato Si’ Movement and Trócaire are represented there, to highlight the urgency of the climate crisis and amplify the voices of faith communities living out Laudato Si’ in many ways across the world – including here in our own parish. Recently, Pope Leo XIV reminded us that ‘there can be no room for indifference or resignation’ when it comes to the climate crisis, each of us are called to act.  Our daily choices, made with awareness and mindfulness, can make a huge difference within our families, communities and our world, in highlighting the urgency of the climate crisis.
